When you charge your Lexus EV in Vancouver or Beaverton, you might not give much thought to your charging connector. But, did you know that there are many different types of charging connectors worldwide? In this EV charging connector guide, we walk you through some of the differences between options – ranging from Type 1 in North America to GBT in China – as well as the multiple charging levels that you’ll find in Hillsboro. Let’s get started!

Types of EV Charging Connectors

Why are there so many types of EV charging connectors? Different brands use different connectors based on location, charging speed, and other factors. The connectors you find in Portland might be different than those found in Japan, for example. Here’s a quick rundown on some of the most common types:

  • Type 1 (SAE J1772): Type 1 chargers are used on popular brands like Nissan, Chevrolet, and Ford. This 5-pin design provides charging speeds around 16 or 32 amps.
  • Type 2 (IEC 62196): Type 2, orMennekes, connectors are usually faster than Type 1 connectors. Using a 7-pin design, they are capable of supporting charging rates up to 32 amps. You’ll find Type 2 connectors on brands like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
  • CCS (Combined Charging System): Faster yet, CCS features two additional DC pins to facilitate high-power charging – reaching an impressive charging capacity of 80A to 200A. You’ll find CCS on brands like Volkswagen and Hyundai.
  • CHAdeMO: CHAdeMO is popular with Japanese brands like Kia and Mitsubishi. While less common than CCS connectors, this 9-pin design supports DC fast charging.
  • GBT: GBT chargers are designed primarily for the electric infrastructure of China. They offer compatibility for both AC and DC charging, including fast charging options.

What Types of EV Charging Connectors Does Lexus Use?

Lexus EVs and plug-in hybrids use a variety of the above types of EV charging connectors. Depending on the model, it may have a Type 1, CCS, or CHAdeMO connector.

Types of EV Charging Levels

In addition to the different types of EV charging connectors, you’ll also find different charging levels. The charging levels indicate how quickly the battery can fill up, or how long it will take to get you back on the road! There are three charging levels that you’ll encounter in the United States:

  • Level 1: Level 1 is the slowest option, but it’s easy to access. Just plug your car into a grounded outlet to start charging.
  • Level 2: Level 2 is the most common charging speed, since it’s used in both public and private charging stations. Not only can you find Level 2 stations around Portland, but you can also install a home charging station for greater convenience.
  • Level 3: Level 3 is only found in public charging stations because it utilizes direct current charging. Levels 1 and 2 use alternating currents, which means they charge on the grid. Level 3 is much faster, because it provides much more energy than the standard household can offer.
